It is best to start with easy to grow orchids like Phalaenopsis. They are very rewarding and great for the beginner. They are very happy if you ignore them for several weeks. I only sumerge mine in a bucket of water every two or three weeks, sometimes I add a little orchid food to the water. Works great. Very little effort and great results!

Good post, and I agree with it. I think that LED lighting is the lighting of the future. It's indeed efficient, thus very eco-friendly. These are the two most important benefits of LED lights to me.

Thanks for a good read.

Cheers,
Roel

This makes me want "dahlia soil" in my entire garden! I used to focus a lot on dahlias when I was more interested (obsessed) with ornamental gardening than food. I think I had 20+ varieties at one point but they've slowly dwindled, leaving behind a few hardy individuals. They're certainly show-stopping!

I love the idea of a designated nursery bed! I'm too guilty of sticking tiny, tender things in among my other plants.

Thanks for the holly info! I was recently surprised to learn that the coffee substitute Yerba Mate is made from a type of holly (Ilex paraguariensis). I have had a similarly flavored tea made from native yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) in spite of the off-putting botanical name (the Clemson professor who made it for me had to spend some time convincing me to try it!) She said the "vomitoria" part refers to the berries instead of the young leaves... which seemed to hold up as true after my taste tests. :)
